It was a return visit for me in February to the probation office in Lower Essex Street, Birmingham to run a safety reps training course. I was last there a couple of years ago to run the same course and it was great to be back to train up another batch of Midlands-based safety reps.
The introductory safety reps training course covered the basics for safety reps in connection with their duties and safety legislation. The main subject areas we looked at were violence at work, particularly around an incident that occurred in a Birmingham office recently.
Mark Olszewski, NOMS Divisional Lead, Health Safety & Fire, NPS Midlands, kindly agreed to attend the course and spoke about Violence & Aggression in a Probation Office and generic risk assessments.
It was a refresher course for a couple of the reps and it was interesting to hear about what they had got up to as safety reps since the last training. Another attendee was an experienced Napo rep who hadn’t done any safety training before and found it beneficial to learn about safety legalisation (this will be another string to her bow). Others on the course were thinking about becoming safety reps and so for them it was useful to hear about the role of the safety rep and safety legislation they have on their side.
The next safety reps training course will be in London 5-7 July.
